How Indian trucker Jashanpreet Singh, arrested for killing 3 in road crash, entered US illegally and was allowed to stay

Jashanpreet Singh, a 21-year-old trucker of Indian origin from Yuba City, California, entered the United States illegally in 2022 by crossing the southern US border from Mexico. He was initially intercepted by the US Border Patrol in California's El Centro Sector in March 2022. However, under then-President Joe Biden's administration policy called "alternatives to detention," Singh, along with certain other undocumented migrants, was allowed to stay free in the country while awaiting immigration court hearings instead of being detained. The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that Singh had no lawful immigration status in the US.

Singh was arrested after causing a deadly multi-vehicle crash on California's 10 Freeway in Ontario on October 21, 2025, which killed three people and injured several others. He was driving under the influence of drugs and did not apply brakes before the crash, which was caught on dashcam. Following his arrest,

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged an immigration detainer against him. Singh now faces charges including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.
