The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in Canada has announced it will review allegations of Chinese foreign interference and money laundering in Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) involving two Buddhist groups, the Great Enlightenment Buddhist Institute Society and The Great Wisdom Buddhist Institute. This follows calls by P.E.I. Premier Rob Lantz and other officials for a federal investigation into these allegations. The RCMP has been aware of these allegations since 2015 and has previously investigated but found no evidence supporting criminal activity or foreign interference. The current review aims to assess new information and allegations. The province's regulatory commission will also investigate land holdings of these organizations under the Lands Protection Act in response to public concern about land ownership and use. The Buddhist groups have stated they welcome the investigation and are committed to cooperating. Opposition leaders and local officials have expressed support for the federal investigation, though some call for a more thorough public inquiry to ensure transparency.
