Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has declared that he is “not afraid of prison” as he prepares to begin a five-year jail term on October 21, 2025, following his conviction for attempting to obtain campaign financing from Libya during his 2007 presidential run under Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.
Sarkozy told La Tribune Dimanche that he has already packed his bags and is calm about his impending incarceration at La Santé Prison in Paris, where he will not request any special privileges. “I will keep my head held high, even at the gates of La Santé,” he stated.
The 70-year-old former leader also revealed that he plans to write a book during his imprisonment, intending to use the time productively rather than seeking pity or complaining about his situation.
Sarkozy, who served as France’s president from 2007 to 2012, was found guilty of criminal conspiracy for his alleged role in a plot by associates to solicit funds from Libya for his campaign. He maintains his innocence and has appealed the conviction.
His imprisonment marks a historic first: Sarkozy will be the first French president in modern times to serve an actual prison term.
