Govt begins process to appoint new chief justice of India as incumbent B R Gavai demits office on November 23

 The government has started the process to appoint the new Chief Justice of India as the current Chief Justice B R Gavai is set to demit office on November 23, 2025. Following the procedure, the Union Law Minister will seek a recommendation from Justice Gavai, the outgoing Chief Justice, for his successor. Justice Surya Kant, who is the seniormost judge after Justice Gavai, is next in line to become the Chief Justice. He is expected to assume office on November 24, 2025, and will serve as Chief Justice of India for nearly 15 months until February 9, 2027.
