A devastating bus fire occurred in the early hours of Friday, October 24, 2025, near Chinna Tekuru village in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh, claiming at least 20 lives and injuring several others.
Details of the Incident.
A Hyderabad–Bengaluru-bound Volvo bus operated by Kaveri Travels caught fire after colliding with a two-wheeler on National Highway 44 around 3:30 a.m. The collision caused the bike’s fuel tank or trapped parts to ignite, setting the bus ablaze within moments .The bus was carrying about 40 passengers, many of whom were asleep when the fire broke out.
Casualties and Rescue
Rescue efforts revealed that 20 people were killed, though initial reports ranged between 10 and 15 fatalities.Around 19 passengers managed to escape by breaking windows, but several others were trapped inside as the bus door jammed due to the hea.The remains of some victims were badly charred, hampering identification.
Official Response
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed condolences and directed officials to provide immediate medical aid and compensation to victims’ families.Vice President CP Radhakrishnan and other leaders also mourned the loss of life.
Preliminary Findings
Investigations suggest the impact with the bike caused a spark, which ignited combustible materials inside the bus.Officials noted that safety issues such as non-functional emergency exits and lack of fire mitigation systems worsened the tragedy.
The Andhra Pradesh police and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) are conducting detailed investigations to confirm the exact cause of the fire .
